Canberra Chooks is a new and innovative business serving residents of the Canberra region. We are committed to providing healthy, happy chooks for you and your children to enjoy in your own backyard.

Our custom made, sustainable chook house, the Free Ranger is made here in Canberra by us. We are a local establishment supporting local businesses and services and we have a strong focus on bird welfare and care. We offer a range of products to rent or buy and services to make the experience of owning chooks both enjoyable and stress free through our ongoing support and advice.

There are numerous benefits of keeping these charming and lovable creatures. They supply us with wonderfully tasting home grown eggs, environmentally friendly pest control and manure that can be used as fertilizer for your garden and lawns or added to your compost heap. Chooks make excellent pets and children just love them.

Chook Houses

Our chook house, the Free Ranger has a metal roof, is made from recycled timber and is designed for Canberra’s weather extremes as timber gives far greater insulation than steel and wire. During the day it provides somewhere comfy for your chooks to lay their eggs and also sturdy protection at night from predators such as foxes.  During the daylight hours your chooks have free range of your backyard or they can run in a fenced off area that can be moved from time to time.  

Another design feature of the Free Ranger is that it is ergonomically friendly by way of easy access for egg collection and cleaning so it makes it ideal for people with mobility problems such as age or disability. The Free Ranger comes with its own nesting box and roost. A fence kit is available if required (see the products section below). Installation by us includes mounting the Free Ranger on stumps as well as giving a comprehensive introduction on chicken care.

Rental Packages

Not sure whether you’re ready for the responsibility and want to try before you buy?  This package includes everything you’ll need to get started, it’s also great for schools, aged care facilities or that special school holiday experience. The rental package is offered for a 4 week period, however, we do offer shorter or longer periods depending on your requirements.  At the end of the rental agreement customers have the option of either purchasing the package at a discounted price or arranging for us to collect it.  The rental package includes the Free Ranger chook house, 2 chooks, nesting box, roost, water bowl and sufficient feed and bedding straw to last 1 month.

Rental package price is $180 for the 1st month (4 weeks) or $50 per week.

Products

In addition to the Free Ranger, we also offer chooks, chook feed, bedding straw, water bowls, nesting boxes, roosting rails and straw bale bags to keep your bedding straw from becoming messy during handling and storage. We strongly encourage customers to allow their chooks to have free range of their backyard, however, if this is not possible we also can supply a fence kit consisting of animal wire, hardwood garden stakes and a gate.

Services

To make your experience that much easier, we offer a full range of services to suit your needs. These include:

• chook sitting while you’re away on holidays,
• a retirement home for your much loved ladies after they’ve finished their productive life, and
• our Premium Service where we visit once a week to clean out the Free Ranger and replace fresh bedding straw, top up your feed bin, scrub out the water dish and inspect your chooks for parasites and assess their general health.
